Guide for shoppers
How long do you have to return it?
Return windows at ten big stores, from 14 days to a year. Each one checked against the store’s own return policy, with a link so you can check it too.
- Electronics have the shortest clocks. TVs, computers and phones are often 14–30 days, even where most things get 90.
- Major appliances can be just 2 days, or 48 hours to report damage.
- Check when the clock starts. Some stores count from the purchase date, others from delivery.
- Memberships and store cards can add time. Best Buy, Target and Lowe’s all have one.
- Policies change. The store’s own page, and your receipt, have the final word.

“No set limit” means the store’s policy doesn’t give a general deadline; it can still refuse returns it considers unreasonable or abusive.
Walmart
90 days “after purchase or upon receipt” for most items, with a store receipt or order number. Shorter windows: 30 days for consumer electronics, computers and PC parts, heating and cooling, vacuums and e-bikes; 14 days for most wireless phones; and major appliances 2 days after delivery (unopened, uninstalled ones up to 30 days). Plants, shrubs and trees: 365 days, in store.
Holidays: most items bought October 1 through December 31 can be returned until January 31, with exceptions such as wireless phones, protection plans, major appliances and Dyson products. No receipt? Walmart says it can try to look up store purchases by card, or online orders by phone number or email.

Target
90 days for most items sold by Target, and 365 days for Target-owned brands with a receipt. Some items, including electronics and limited-time collections, have their own return windows shown on the product page. Target Circle members and Target Circle Card holders get an extra 30 days. Gift cards, trading cards and digital downloads can’t be returned. In store, the Wallet barcode in the Target app can stand in for a paper receipt.

Best Buy
15 days for most products, and the clock starts the day you receive it, not the day you ordered. My Best Buy Plus and My Best Buy Total members get 60 days on most products. Activatable devices like phones have a shorter window, and holiday and seasonal décor follow their own rules.
That makes Best Buy the clock most worth watching: a TV delivered on a Sunday has to be back by the Monday two weeks later.

The Home Depot
90 days with proof of purchase for most merchandise. 30 days, unused and in the original sealed packaging, for furniture, consumer electronics like TVs and computers, paint sprayers and gas-powered outdoor tools, and seasonal and holiday décor. 7 days for dehumidifiers, window and portable air conditioners, gas pressure washers and portable generators. For major appliances, report damage or defects within 48 hours of delivery.

Lowe’s
90 days with a receipt for most new, unused merchandise. 30 days for TVs and electronics, liquid paint, water heaters, most outdoor power equipment and most third-party marketplace items. 48 hours for major appliances, air conditioners, portable generators, pressure washers and chainsaws. Trees, shrubs and perennials get 365 days, as do most purchases made with a Lowe’s credit card.

Costco
Costco’s “risk-free 100% satisfaction guarantee” covers most merchandise without a set time limit. The big exception is electronics: televisions, projectors, major appliances and several other categories must come back within 90 days of when you received them. Some items, such as tickets, gift cards and precious metals, can’t be returned.

Apple
14 calendar days from the date you received the item, for purchases made from Apple. Products bought from another retailer go back to that retailer, and returns are handled in the country where you bought them.

IKEA (U.S.)
365 days for unopened products and 180 days for opened ones, with proof of purchase. Returns can’t be made at Planning Studios or Pick Up Points.

Nordstrom
Nordstrom says there are no time limits for returns or exchanges and handles them case by case. Marketplace sellers set their own windows, shown in your order history. A receipt or order number makes it faster; without one, a refund may come as a gift card at the current price.

Canadian Tire
90 days for unopened items in their original packaging, with the receipt. 30 days for home and personal electronics, cameras and e-scooters, and 14 days for auto electronics.

Let the receipt remind you
Snap or share the receipt into Hey Bungee. It reads the store, the total and the “return by” date, and comes back a few days before the window closes. No typing, no account.
Launching soon. Scan or tap now and it opens in the App Store on launch day.
Five ways people lose a return they were owed
- Assuming everything gets 90 days. The expensive things, TVs, laptops and appliances, usually get less.
- Counting from the wrong day. If the store counts from delivery, the clock may have started later than you think; if it counts from purchase, earlier.
- Losing the receipt. Many stores can look up a card purchase, but not all, and not forever. A photo of the receipt on the day you buy is the cheapest insurance there is.
- Opening a sealed box. Several short windows apply only to unused items in their original sealed packaging.
- Waiting for “this weekend”. A 15-day window is two weekends. Put the date somewhere that will remind you.
Questions
Does the return window start on the purchase date or the delivery date?
It depends on the store. Best Buy and Apple count from the day you receive the item; Walmart says “after purchase or upon receipt.” Your receipt or order confirmation often prints the exact last day.
Do I need the original receipt?
It’s always the easiest route. Walmart and Target describe ways to look up purchases or use an app barcode; other stores may refuse or refund to store credit without proof of purchase.
Are holiday purchases different?
Often. Walmart extends most October 1 to December 31 purchases to January 31. Other stores announce their holiday terms each season, so check the store’s page in November.
Return policies change, and stores make exceptions by item and by state. This page summarizes each store’s published policy as of the date shown; the store’s own page and your receipt have the final word.
